The short answer

The Breville Barista Express is an espresso machine with a grinder built in. Breville lists an "integrated conical burr grinder with 16 grind settings" and "Manual hand-crafted microfoam" for milk. 1 On 6 November 2026 Breville's US page showed US$499.95 and US$699.95. 1

What the Barista Express is

The Breville Barista Express is a machine that grinds, doses and brews in one unit. Breville's headline for it is "Grind, dose and extract all in one." 1

Its page describes "Auto grind & dose with an integrated conical burr grinder with 16 grind settings." 1 A burr grinder crushes beans between two rings, and the settings change how fine the grounds come out.

We haven't used this machine, and we don't rank it. This page lines up what Breville says on its own pages. If you're still deciding what kind of machine you want, start with how home espresso machines differ.

Heating, pressure and the portafilter

Breville says the "Thermocoil heating system with PID temperature control delivers water at exactly 200°F." 1 A PID is a controller that holds the temperature steady.

The Australian page gives the same system in Celsius: "delivers water at exactly 93°C." 2

The portafilter is the handle that holds the coffee. Breville lists a "54 mm stainless steel portafilter" and says the ideal dose is "18g of freshly ground beans." 1

On pressure, the page says espresso starts with "low pressure pre-infusions, followed by a high pressure (9 bar) extraction process." 1 It adds that this comes from a "15 bar Italian pump." 1

Milk: you steam it by hand

Breville's page says "Manual hand-crafted microfoam." 1

Its wording for the wand is "Our powerful steam wands are designed to quickly turn milk into smooth microfoam." 1

Breville's page also lists a "Stainless Steel Milk Jug" among the accessories. 1 If hands-free milk matters to you, compare it with the machines in our Breville range explainer, which notes which models describe an automatic wand.

What comes in the box

The US page lists these accessories, among others: "Dosing Funnel™ Attachment," "1 cup & 2cup Single & Dual Wall Filter Baskets," "Integrated Tamper," "Cleaning disc and tablets," and "Water Filter Holder and Water Filter." 1

The listed size is "15.9 x 13.1 x 12.4 in" (width, depth, height). 1 Measure your counter, and the space above it, before you buy.

Prices on 6 November 2026

On the US page, the product shows "$499.95" on the add-to-cart button, with "$699.95" also listed. 1 The page text doesn't say which one is the regular price, so check it on the day you buy. Both are US dollars.

Readers in Australia should use Breville's Australian page for local pricing.

Care, descaling and the manual

The US page links an "Instruction Manual" and lists "Cleaning disc and tablets" in the box. 1 Cleaning, descaling and any other upkeep should follow that manual.

For the descaling question, our page on how to descale a Breville covers what Breville's own pages say and why you follow your model's manual. Don't open the machine or change its parts.

Not sure what the grinder numbers mean? Our explainer on grinders for espresso covers the terms.
